Week 1 - Run 3

Posted in General
Post date: August 29, 2007

Well, yesterday’s run went brilliantly. Starting to get my breathing right and neither of us were as drained as we were on the previous two runs.

This running plan really seems to be working great! We both look forward to our runs as it seems to act as a stress relief tool.

Circle - Update

Post date: August 25, 2007

I received an email from David Venter of Circle this afternoon.

I had replied to a previous mail he had sent me and I hadn’t channged the subject of the mail so due to their “ticket system” he did not see my emails until today. Fine fair and well I’m an idiot for not changing the subject on the emails but why did no one contact when I left messages on their website?

Anyways, they will be working on the problem as soon as possible.

Being a xbox man myself and having experienced the Red Ring of Death 3 times already I found this pretty amusing.

Week 1 Run 2 - feeling it

Post date: August 24, 2007

So last night we completed Run 2 of our first week. I will be honest, my legs were still recovering from Monday’s run because we never stretched properly but last night we stretched and did our run. it ended up going very very well.

I’m not that stiff at all this morning which is great. The run itself wasn’t easier or harder than Monday’s run but I’m not expecting miracles first week out.

Free C# Book

Post date: August 22, 2007

Ok so the title is misleading but it basically is a book. It is in fact the C# Language Specification. And from the one or two sections I’ve already read its better than any other book I have read thus far!

Get it HERE

Week 1 - Run 1, Weighing in

Post date: August 20, 2007

Now that both myself and my fiance are healthy again and have overcome the flu we could *FINALLY* start our Couch to 5K running plan.

So today before I started, I decided to weigh myself before starting all of this. I don’t expect to lose a lot of weight but to rather shift it around. I weighed in at around 93kg.

The idea behind this whole plan is obviously to get fit but whats great about it is the idea isn’t to set out and run 5K on day one because obviously for us Programmer Geeks that’s a bit tough ;) The idea is to either run for time or distance. We decided to go for time instead because the idea of 5Km is unbearable.

We started off with a brisk 5minute walk, we then proceeded to jog for 60 seconds and walk for 90 seconds. We did this for about 2.6km. I did honestly not expect to make it so far we it worked quite well!

As for a side note, remember to stretch properly before starting out. I kinda forgot this part and my back is currently killing me. This is the only I’ll learn I suppose. Check out more for this plan here: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Challenge - Drive from Springs to Rivonia in peak hour traffic

Posted in General
Post date: August 14, 2007

So tomorrow is Armand’s talk on Ruby in Rivonia. I will finally be making another saDev talk since so many things always popup when I wanna attend a meeting. The interesting part ofcourse is that I live in Springs and the talk starts at 1830. I finish work at 1700.

That gives me 90minutes to travel approx 95km in rush hour traffic. I just hope I don’t miss too much at the start! Anyone got any quick backroads into Rivonia?

When your job becomes boring

Posted in General
Post date: August 13, 2007

Recently I have begun wondering whether going into development was the wrong idea. I’ve only been developing for 2 years now so I’m still getting into it. I have been second guessing myself and all my recent decisions, which is actually so stupid. I recently got one of “those” emails that the ladies send around everyday about how life is in your control, blah blah blah.

For some unknown reason I decided to actually go through one of these powerpoint presentations. Basically it came down to two things.

1) Enjoy Life and its challenges
2) Be grumpy and stressed for the rest of your life

Now generally I would just hit the delete key as I always do when something hit me. When are we as developers really happy in our work? When we’re under pressure and we find some amazing way of doing something. We then go home with this ultimate feeling of having done something amazing! Thats what I’ve been lacking!!! Why though?

I have become complacent in my day to day work. I am currently maintaing VB6 code and writing and doing anything new in C#. Once we get the time we are going to redesign 3 apps into 1. But because that isn’t now I haven’t been experimenting with things the way I used to and I think thats where my boredom is fitting in. I am finally in a position I wanted to be in for a while. I live close to work and have very little stress so now I should be at my most productive! Watch this space people.

For anyone else bored at their job, think about why you joined there and why you origianlly enjoyed your job! Once you get back to the basics of what it is you love then it suddenly becomes so much better!
