Firebug and YSlow for FireFox

Posted in Web Development
Post date: July 25, 2007

Wanna see whats happening on your webpages? If you’re a FireFox user then get the following add-on FireBug. This little add-on will show you a wealth of information concerning the webpage you are currently viewing. But there’s a better reason to install this.

Once FireBug  is installed then head over to YSlow.  This little add-on will tell you exactly WHY your website is so slow and what needs to be done to improve it. This is a simply MUST have tool for any web developer in South Africa! Once you have both installed, restart Firefox and then go to Tools –> Firebug –> Open Firebug

Firebug will show you your HTML, CSS, SCRIPT, DOM as well as how long everything took to load. The console will show any errors in your XHTML or HTML.  Then its time to analyze the page using YSlow.

In the Firebug pane, click on the YSlow tab. It is the last tab at the bottom.  Once you click this, Peformance and Stats buttons appear above. If you wanna test the performance of the page then click performance. YSlow will then grade the page and provide recommendationson how to speed up your page. Selecting the stats option will show basic information regarding Empty and Full Cache sizes for the page.

History within your applications

Here’s a question to all you hardcore developer people. How important is history in your design of an application.

Lets say for instance, you have a client who has a car and a household on your system. Would it be important to you to be able to see the history of the client at any moment? For me this is a must, but due to an executive decision this will probably never get implemented. We are redesigning the system here so its the perfect time to implement something like this. The only reason I’ve received for not being allowed to implement it, is that the powers that be do not want redundant info in the database.

Its easy to implement though and I feel it is a very important part of any financial system. What are your thoughts?

From Couch to 5K - A simple running Program

Posted in General
Post date: July 17, 2007

Being a developer I generally sit all day, go home, relax for a while then do some research or spend time with family or friends. Over the course of the last 3 years its pretty much been a bad diet and a lack of exercise. Until I found this running program today : http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

This looks simple enough to follow and hopefully I’ll be able to get fit for the first time in years. I’ll post my experience with this on my blog so that you can decide for yourself whether it is worth it or not.

After hearing all the hype surrounding Flock the “social” web-browser, I have finally decided to try it out. In all honestly, it looks like firefox with a cool theme but after really *looking* at it I am amazed at the host of features. such as blogging which I am doing now.

Check out www.flock.com you won’t regret it!

Topic of the Month

Post date: July 16, 2007

I have decided, rather than just blogging about some random topic I might encounter during the day, I’m going to choose  a monthly topic or topics. Idea behind this is to further my research into different areas and focus on that area for approx a month or so. I have already decided next next month I’ll be focusing on Ruby and Ruby on Rails. I have seen Ruby On Rails in action and it seems quite cool.

Also, Armand from dotNet.Org.Za will be presenting a talk at the next SaDev meeting and giving a Ruby on Rails presentation. To RSVP go to either Armand’s blog entry at http://dotnet.org.za/armand/archive/2007/07/13/hitting-the-rails.aspx or register at saDev and goto the thread located at http://sadeveloper.net/forums/thread/6159.aspx

There will also be a “movie evening” the on August 8th regarding Ruby, RSVP at http://sadeveloper.net/forums/thread/6162.aspx

Pownce

I finally got myself a Pownce invite! Thanks again to Craig (http://dotnet.org.za/craign). So what is Pownce? No its NOT another social networking tool. Think of it as a mass messaging network. You add your friends that are on Pownce to your “network list”. Then, when you want to share a message, file or link with everyone you simply post it using Pownce. You can also share things privately with people on your list.

So far it seems really awesome! Unfortunately you only get 6 invites to pass around :-/

You Know You’re Too Stressed If…

  • You can achieve a “Runner’s High” by sitting up.
  • The Sun is too loud.
  • Trees begin to chase you.
  • You begin to explore the possibility of setting up an I.V. drip solution of espresso.
  • You wonder if brewing is really a necessary step for the consumption of coffee.
  • You can hear mimes.
  • You say the same sentence over and over again, not realizing that you have said it before.
  • You believe that if you think hard enough, you can fly.
  • Things become “Very Clear.”
  • You ask the drive-thru attendant if you can get your order to go.
  • You say the same sentence over and over again, not realizing that you have said it before.
  • You begin speaking in a language that only you and Chanelers can understand.
  • The less sense matter and matter is more than sense.
  • You and Reality file for divorce.
  • You can skip without a rope.
  • It appears that people are speaking to you in binary code.
  • You say the same sentence over and over again, not realizing that you have said it before.
  • You have great revelations concerning: Life, the Universe and Everything else, but can’t quite find the words for them before the white glow disappears, leaving you more confused than before.
  • You say the same sentence over and over again, not realizing that you have said it before.
  • You can travel without moving.
  • Antacid tablets become your sole source of nutrition.
  • You discover the aesthetic beauty of office supplies.
  • Losing your mind was okay, but when the voices in your head quieted, it was like losing your best friend.
  • You say the same sentence over and over again, not realizing that you have said it before
